For over 30 years, José Luis Vargas (PR, 1965) has centered his transmedia practice on the exploration of possible imaginaries. Through painting, sculpture, video, installation, performance, as well as an educator and social organizer, he introduces the spectator to an imaginary that can well be personal as well as collective. His practice brings us closer to an atemporal space where the past and present body of the artist comes together with historical referents of the collective memory, through a visual vocabulary that’s nourished by science fiction, the supernatural, and the fantastic. El Museo de Historia Sobrenatural (EMHS), founded in 2005, is a multimedia project that fuses the various disciplines of his practice to create a dream like immersive experience in Vargas’ practice. For this edition in Hidrante, EMHS presentes an autobiography of the Santo de Santurce, EMHS’ director, composed of recent work that includes assemblage sculpture, video, sound, and painting.
