The Katherine E. Nash Gallery and Hidrante are pleased to present Vaivén: 21st-Century Art from Puerto Rico and Its Diaspora, on view September 9 to December 6, 2025 at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery in Minneapolis.

Connoting back-and-forth movement, the word vaivén is frequently used to describe the supposed ease with which Puerto Ricans travel between the United States and Puerto Rico. Not only physical but also psychological, this diasporic oscillation is inextricably linked to Puerto Rican heritage, and the fluidity between both geographies is constant, complex, and profound.

A collaboration between the Katherine E. Nash Gallery, operated by the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota, and Hidrante, San Juan, Vaivén: 21st-Century Art of Puerto Rico and Its Diaspora traces the work of forty-three intergenerational artists from Puerto Rico and its American diaspora, who explore the hybridity of memory, language, place, and ancestral knowledge in relation to acts of witness, resistance, and kinship. The accompanying bilingual catalogue highlights the diversity of artistic genres and styles, as well as the changing interpretations of home and belonging, unique to Puerto Rico amid the constant transnational migrations of its people.
